The vocabulary of electronic scoring, in plain language.
- Acoustic detection
- A method for locating shots that uses the sound waves produced by a projectile's impact. Sensors detect the waves and the system triangulates the shot position from the sensor data.
- Decimal scoring
- Scoring that subdivides each ring into tenths (for example 10.4 instead of 10), used in ISSF finals and by electronic targets for finer feedback.
- Display manager
- Software that collects live scoring from every lane and presents it across a range: an operator interface, lane and TV displays, and an optional view that remote spectators can watch but cannot control.
- Electronic Target System (ETS)
- A target that detects shot impacts electronically and displays the position and score on a screen, replacing manual scoring of paper targets.
- Hardware health monitoring
- Software diagnostics that report the condition of target electronics so problems are caught before they affect a session or match.
- Impact medium
- The material the projectile passes through at the target, where the detectable impact occurs: a paper roll at 10 Meter and rubber rolls at 25 Meter and 50 Meter.
- ISSF
- The International Shooting Sport Federation, which governs Olympic shooting disciplines and defines event formats, target dimensions and scoring rules.
- Lane
- One shooter's firing point and target line. Display software coordinates scoring across many lanes simultaneously.
- Mean Point of Impact (MPI)
- The average position of a group of shots. Coaches use MPI to distinguish issues with sight adjustment from technique inconsistencies.
- Paper roll
- A consumable roll of target paper that advances automatically after each shot in 10 Meter electronic targets, presenting a clean face for every shot.
- Pellet trap
- The container behind a 10 Meter target face that safely captures fired pellets. Removable traps simplify cleaning.
- Range traffic lights
- Red and green signal lights that control when shooters may fire, required for timed 25 Meter events and controlled by the scoring software in Tachus systems.
- Series
- A block of shots (commonly 10) that match courses of fire are divided into. Electronic systems total each series automatically.
